NY Mets Star Kodai Senga to Begin Minor League Rehab Assignment
Carlos Mendoza said Senga could throw 50 to 60 pitches and work up to four innings as he returns from lower back pain.
On Friday, New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga makes his first minor league rehab start for Single-A St. Lucie, with Manager Carlos Mendoza limiting him to 50 to 60 pitches over four innings maximum.
Senga has remained on the injured list since April 26 with lower back pain, posting an 0-4 record and 9.00 ERA in five starts before his sidelining.
At his best, the 33-year-old All-Star possesses a frontline starter's arsenal, evidenced by his 98-99 mph fastballs and 41 percent whiff rate with his ghost fork during Spring Training.
First baseman Jared Young and left-handed pitcher A.J. Minter are nearing their return, with Minter appearing in back-to-back rehab games on Tuesday and Wednesday for the first time this year.
With Senga running out of time to prove himself, Mendoza indicated the team will evaluate his progress following this assignment and "we'll probably have a discussion," Mendoza said.
