Meta seeks to avoid EU fine with free WhatsApp access for rival AI chatbots
The offer gives the European Commission time to seek commitments that could avert a finding of wrongdoing and a fine of up to 10% of annual turnover.
Meta Platforms offered rival AI chatbots free access to its WhatsApp business API for one month on Tuesday to resolve European Union antitrust concerns and potentially avert fines of up to 10 per cent of annual global turnover.
Last October, Meta blocked third-party AI providers from WhatsApp, later charging fees for access in March; the European Commission subsequently described these paid rules as 'equivalent to the previous access ban.'
The Interaction Company of California initiated the antitrust complaint against Meta, which faces potential penalties of up to 10 per cent of its annual global turnover if found in violation of European Union antitrust laws.
Officials welcomed the move, calling it 'adequate conditions needed to discuss commitments' with Meta; however, the process remains conditional on Meta's 'genuine intention to address the Commission's concerns' within a short window.
Beyond this antitrust case, Meta faces separate investigations in Ireland earlier this month over recommender systems and Digital Services Act compliance, plus a legal battle against Ofcom over alleged 'disproportionate' penalties under the Online Safety Act.
