A clear message from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Brussels: Russia is escalating and shows no intention of ending the war, while Europe must support Ukraine with stable, long-term aid.
Europe is standing by Zelensky, as is German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who stresses that Russian President Vladimir Putin shows no inclination to end the war in Ukraine. At the same time, he points out that the West currently lacks the means to exert the necessary pressure.
"That's why we must help Ukrainians survive the winter and defend their country."
The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaia Kalas, stated before today's European Council meeting (16/10) that there are no indications that Russia wishes to end the war or to seek any form of ceasefire or peace agreement. In the same context, Ms. Kalas underlined that, under these circumstances, the European Union must support Ukraine in order to face the difficulties of the winter and continue to defend its territory.
