Mercer uses all phases and holds off East Texas A&m 23-15

Mercer defeated East Texas 23-15 on Saturday night in a season opener, with quarterback Jaylen King throwing a touchdown and Cameron Goggins returning an interception for a score.
A 55-yard field goal from Simon Zeidan opened the scoring, followed by a 12-yard touchdown pass from King to Jackson Kostmayer for a 10-0 lead before halftime.
Goggins recorded a 38-yard pick-6 off Eric Rodriguez, extending the lead significantly. The defense clinched victory when Rodriguez threw incomplete to Jake Whitehead on 4th-and-goal at the 9.
The Lions rallied when Micah Simpson caught nine passes for 165 yards and a 48-yard touchdown from Rodriguez. Quay Middlebrooks added a touchdown run from the 9 to narrow the final margin to 23-15.
Ranked 21 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll, the Bears enter the season with momentum from this opening victory. The win provides a strong foundation as they pursue their national ranking goals.
