Meep, meep. ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ opens with $15.5 million, 'Spider-Man' stays No. 1 for fifth weekend
Debuting this weekend, the live-action-animation hybrid Coyote vs. Acme opened at No. 2 with $15.4 million in ticket sales on 3,575 North American screens.
Warner Bros. originally shelved the completed project in 2023 for a $30 million tax write-off; following public outcry, Ketchup Entertainment acquired distribution rights last year.
Critics and audiences praised the comedy, which holds a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore; starring John Cena and Will Forte, it follows Wile E. Coyote suing the Acme Corporation.
The newcomer outperformed The Odyssey and The Dog Stars, a new drama from director Ridley Scott, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day maintained first place for its fifth consecutive weekend.
Industry analyst David A. Gross noted the film's strong reception should drive ancillary business, positioning the release to recoup its investment through streaming and home video markets.
