Analysis: Ukraine has rejected the US proposal to hand over Donbas and create a free economic zone, which was part of a new version of the peace agreement that should end the war between Moscow and Kiev. The Americans are insisting on their proposals. That is why tension reigned at the Ukrainian-American talks in Berlin today. European leaders are due to join the talks in the evening, wanting to try to save the situation.
The United States has demanded that Ukraine cede the territory it still controls in the so-called Donbas region, saying that this is a condition for peace talks with Russia. It is also considered unlikely that frozen Russian assets in Belgium will be able to be used to finance loans to Ukraine, partly due to pressure from Washington DC.
During the talks in Berlin, US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner pressed the Ukrainian side with a demand to give Russia the parts of the Donbas controlled by it.
