Former Liberal Leader Matthew Guy Denies Assaulting MP Moira Deeming
Victoria Police are investigating the allegation after video obtained by the ABC showed Guy placing a hand on Deeming’s back during the dispute.
Victoria Police concluded their investigation on Thursday, finding no evidence of criminal offense in allegations that former Liberal leader Matthew Guy assaulted MP Moira Deeming at a community event on May 23.
Deeming alleged Guy grabbed her in a violent headlock at a Macedonian community function in Sunshine West. However, CCTV footage showed an innocuous interaction, with the pair leaning in to talk.
After approaching Opposition Leader Jess Wilson's office, Deeming reported the alleged assault to police on June 16. Wilson stated Thursday it would be "inappropriate to comment while police investigated."
Guy called the claims "ridiculous and unsubstantiated," vehemently denying wrongdoing. Liberal MPs expressed "white hot anger" over the incident, with some demanding party action.
The internal dispute threatens to destabilize the Coalition five months before the state election. Party leaders cancelled a planned press conference Thursday during their "fresh start tour" amid the controversy.
