New Museum Names Massimiliano Gioni as New Director
The longtime artistic director will succeed Lisa Phillips after an extensive international search and help lead the museum’s newly expanded campus.
- The New Museum in New York named longtime artistic director Massimiliano Gioni as its next director, effective August 1. Gioni succeeds Lisa Phillips, who announced her departure last fall after twenty-six years in the role.
- Museum president James-Keith Brown told the New York Times the institution sought a leader who "thinks globally." Brown noted that after a rigorous search, "our conclusion was that our best person was right in front of us."
- Gioni first joined the Museum in 2006 as a curator, rising to artistic director in 2014. Over the past twenty years, he played an essential role in the Museum's evolution as a leading international destination for contemporary art.
- Beyond the Museum, Gioni helmed several international biennials, including the 2013 Venice Biennale and 2010 Gwangju Biennale. He launched the New Museum Triennial in 2009 with co-curators Lauren Cornell and Laura Hoptman.
- Gioni thanked the board and selection committee for entrusting him with the institution's legacy. He described the appointment as a "vote of confidence in our entire institution and its staff" while promising to shape an exciting future.
