Maritime Provinces Sign Onto Almost Country-Wide, Coast-to-Coast Energy Grid Agreement
Nine provinces and territories signed an MOU to create a national electricity corridor aiming to improve grid reliability and expand interprovincial electricity trade.
- This past week, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Yukon, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Northwest Territories signed an MOU at a Toronto conference to build cross-country energy infrastructure.
- Built historically with a north-south focus, the grid now consists of 13 islands that reduce energy independence, and the MOU builds on last September’s summit prioritizing transmission strengthening.
- In Canada's north, officials warned energy security is a real vulnerability as Yukon used more than 90 per cent of its capacity in December when temperatures dipped to minus 50 C, forcing mines to disconnect, and transmission line costs remain the same whether serving 400,000 or four million rate payers.
- The MOU aims to build national intertie projects and develop policy to expand electricity trade within Canada, while provinces will map costs and timelines and seek federal funding for transmission corridors.
- Despite broad support, Quebec did not sign but has 'expressed support' while emphasising provincial jurisdiction, and Saskatchewan described the MOU as a `historic step` toward energy security.
