Barefoot Footprints Led to Rescue of Man Lost for Days Along Snowy Trail in Oregon
A Marion County sheriff's deputy followed barefoot tracks for nearly 5 miles and found the man, who was being treated for frostbite and hypothermia.
Forest Patrol Deputy Ramseyer discovered barefoot footprints in snow near Breitenbush Lake along the Pacific Crest Trail, which sits on a high plateau north of Mount Jefferson, initiating a rescue operation.
Officials reported the man was lost for four days in the Oregon wilderness, with his barefoot snow prints alerting rescuers to his desperate situation in the high-altitude terrain.
After tracking the footprints for nearly five miles, the Forest Patrol Deputy located the man wrapped in a sleeping bag near the trail, providing critical evidence of his survival.
Emergency responders transported the man to Detroit, Oregon, for immediate treatment, then transferred him to Santiam Hospital, where officials said he is receiving care for frostbite and hypothermia.
The Marion County Sheriff stated on Facebook that the deputy's "vigilance and commitment likely saved the mans life," while reminding wilderness travelers to always be prepared for emergencies.
