Marine Veteran Working as Security Guard Stops Gunman at Florida Citibank Campus

Authorities say the attack was triggered by a $2,500 debt dispute, and more than 3,200 people were on campus when gunfire broke out.

  • On Wednesday, 35-year-old Jacob Pearson crashed his car into a Citibank courtyard in Tampa, Florida, fatally shooting an employee before an armed security guard shot and stopped him; Pearson was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
  • Targeting the campus over a $2,500 debt, Pearson called an attorney affiliated with Citibank three hours before the attack, threatening violence if a court hearing wasn't canceled, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister reported.
  • Deputies arrived within one minute of 12:11 p.m. 911 calls, and more than 300 law enforcement officers evacuated more than 3,000 employees from the complex in roughly two and a half hours.
  • Company Chair and CEO Jane Fraser confirmed the victim was a Citi employee, stating, "My heart goes out to our colleague's loved ones," and expressed gratitude to the security team for preventing further harm.
  • Employees are not expected to work on Thursday, according to a company spokesperson, as counseling and other resources are being provided in the days ahead following the shooting.
