Marathon Confirms Seasonal Resets, Which Means Everyone's Gear, Contract and Faction Progression, and Player Level Wipe Every Few Months
Bungie will reset gear, contracts, faction progress, and player levels every three months while preserving achievements and cosmetics to keep gameplay fresh and balanced.
- On March 3, Bungie published a seasons blog introducing Marathon's seasonal wipes that reset player gear and progression every few months before the March 5 launch with Season 1, First Step.
- Bungie says seasonal wipes are designed to keep the game dangerous and meaningful, with seasons lasting about three months and adding new gear, Runner shells, maps, events and other content.
- Some long‑term progressions like achievements, cosmetics, titles, and Codex progression will remain intact, while all equipped gear, vaulted loot, contracts, faction progression, and player levels reset each season.
- Interest spiked during a Server Slam that peaked at over 140,000 concurrent Steam players, and Bungie confirmed preloading will be available soon though not live everywhere yet.
- Seasonal updates will be free to access or earn for all players, differing from Bungie's other live service with paid expansions; Season 2, Nightfall, adds the Cradle system for Runner customization.
