- On Friday night, two Carroll County Sheriff deputies were shot during a welfare check at a home on Fancy Gap Highway. Deputy Logan Utt sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased; the second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and remains in stable condition.
- The shooting occurred after deputies made contact with suspect Michael Puckett, who authorities say opened fire on the responding officers. Puckett fled the scene immediately and remains at large.
- Authorities have launched a "coordinated law enforcement search" for the suspect. Officials warn Puckett "should be considered armed and extremely dangerous," urging the public not to approach him and to immediately call 911.
