RCMP Investigate Photo of Man in Nazi Uniform While Trick-or-Treating in Nova Scotia
RCMP said an investigation would be needed to determine whether the costume amounted to a Criminal Code offence.
The RCMP is investigating a complaint about a man photographed wearing a Nazi uniform with a swastika armband while trick-or-treating in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, on Halloween. Police received the complaint on Monday, November 2.
Cole Harbour resident Paige Hoveling spotted the man while trick-or-treating with her family and described the costume as resembling "a Nazi in any Hollywood movie." Witnesses said the man was pushing a stroller alongside children.
Halifax Regional Municipality Mayor Andy Fillmore condemned the symbols as "hatred, antisemitism and atrocities," while Councillor Trish Purdy called wearing the uniform "morally repugnant," particularly amid rising antisemitism across the globe.
Legal expert Wayne MacKay, professor emeritus at Dalhousie University's Schulich School of Law, said proving hate crimes requires "vilification and detestation," noting "it's not likely to produce either civil or criminal consequences." RCMP Cpl. Mandy Edwards urged reporting bias-motivated incidents.
Parliament passed the Combatting Hate Act earlier this year, criminalizing public displays of certain Nazi symbols. Jewish advocacy group B'nai Brith logged 6,800 antisemitic incidents last year, the highest number since data collection began in 1982.
