Federal investigators are now looking into a viral incident in Lahaina after a video appearing to show a man throwing a large rock toward a Hawaiian monk seal spread widely across social media.

Video of a man throwing a large rock at a monk seal in Maui made the rounds on social media. In the clip, the animal was calmly swimming near the beach at Lahaina when the thrown rock crashed very closely in front of it, sending up a splash of water -- and causing the seal to scramble away in a rush.

DLNR Investigating Harassment of Monk Seal

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is investigating social media postings on Instagram that appear to show an adult male throwing an object toward a monk seal while it was swimming in the water off the Lahaina shoreline.
