Man jailed for piloting small boat carrying 26 others
The court said Abdela was the 20th small boat pilot jailed in four months for endangering lives at sea.
Jemal Abdela was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Winchester Crown Court after pleading guilty to endangering others by piloting a small boat carrying 26 people, including six children, toward the Kent coast.
Defense lawyer Francesca Hallett stated Abdela fled war-torn Eritrea and endured torture in Libya for eight months before feeling the UK was the safest option, though he claimed passengers forced him to pilot the vessel.
Prosecutor Matthew Parris told the court Abdela attempted to disguise himself by wearing a hat when immigration officers approached the boat, which lacked essential safety equipment including GPS, flares, and maps.
Judge James Bromige ruled that Abdela would "ordinarily" be deported upon completing his prison sentence, though weather and sea conditions that day had reduced the inherent risks of the crossing.
Minister for Border Security and Asylum Anna Turley called Abdela a "reckless criminal," noting he is the 20th pilot jailed in four months as the government intensifies enforcement against dangerous small boat crossings.
