Man handed 7.5 year sentence for 2017 Oak Bay machete attack
The judge said the attack left Nermeen Alireza hospitalized for a week and still with only 70% hand function nearly a decade later.
On Sept. 28, Justice Gareth Morley sentenced Kaspar Handspiker to 7.5 years for breaking into an Oak Bay home and attacking house-sitter Nermeen Alireza with a machete in 2017.
During the incident, Handspiker produced a machete and struck Alireza on her head, arms, and hands, causing "serious, significant lacerations," then used her stolen credit cards for purchases including scratch-and-win tickets.
Following his attempt to burn evidence, police conducted a "complex investigation" that took years to resolve; with credit for time served, Handspiker has 704 days remaining.
Alireza, who recovered only about 70 per cent of her hand function, showed "bravery in coming forward," and Morley noted she is "able, at this point, to extend forgiveness" to Handspiker.
Morley noted Handspiker "has not had an easy life" with difficult childhood circumstances, yet emphasized such hardship does not excuse the crime, though Handspiker has expressed remorse and earned his high school diploma.
