Man gets more than 16 years in prison for Islamic State knife attack on B.C. bus
Prosecutors said the attack was meant to advance Islamic State objectives, and the court ordered Kawam to serve 16 years and 8 months consecutively.
On Thursday, the British Columbia Supreme Court sentenced Abdul Aziz Kawam to 16 years and eight months in prison for a 2023 stabbing on a Surrey bus, comprising 15 years for attempted murder and 20 months for aggravated assault.
Kawam was convicted in June 2025 after the court determined the April 1, 2023, attack on a public bus advanced the objectives of the Islamic State terror group, which prosecutors described as a deliberate terrorist act.
Chris Jensen, whose partner is the victim's sister, said the victim suffered vocal-cord damage during the unprovoked assault, noting the incident could have been fatal had the knife been sharper.
George Dolhai, Director of Public Prosecutions, stated the slashing intentionally sought to cause "suspicion and fear" in public spaces, affirming the act was "an attack on all Canadians, including Canadian Muslims."
Officials stated that "attempts to misuse or misrepresent any religion for extremist purposes" highlight the importance of rejecting ideological violence to maintain the unity and trust that Canadians value.
