Man found dead in floodwaters as roads cut off across region
Police are investigating whether the 57-year-old drove into floodwaters as torrential rain triggered more than 200 mm of rain in parts of Queensland.
On Monday, October 26, 2026, Queensland Police Service officers found a man dead in floodwaters at Smothering Creek in Boompa. The man was declared deceased shortly after 11 a.m., and police are preparing a report for the coroner.
An unusual weather system delivered a days-long deluge across Australia, triggering widespread flooding in Queensland. Meteorologist Angus Hines of the Bureau of Meteorology described the system as atypical, with heavy rain bands and cloud cover driving dangerous conditions.
Boompa Road recorded 148 millimetres of rain within 24 hours on Sunday. A severe storm stalled over the Darling Downs, dropping more than 100 millimetres of rain over 12 hours in parts.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Swiftwater crews rescued six campers stranded by rising floodwaters at a public campground in Leyburn on Monday. The group was retrieved around 11 a.m. without physical injuries.
Conditions are expected to ease from Tuesday, with the Bureau forecasting brighter weather and a lower chance of showers. Hines noted the week ahead would bring "longer nice weather gaps" between rain and cooler temperatures.
