Man drives car into pedestrians at grocery store in California mountain town, injuring 4
Jonathan Maurer intentionally drove into four pedestrians, including children fundraising for a youth baseball trip, causing non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
On Saturday, 49-year-old Jonathan Maurer of Coalinga allegedly drove into a group outside the Truckee Safeway on Donner Pass Road, injuring four people.
Members of the Tahoe Titans youth baseball team were fundraising outside the store selling beef jerky for a Cooperstown trip, and police say they believe the driver intentionally struck the pedestrians and store.
Witnesses said bystanders screamed and tried to open the locked vehicle, parents sought to reunite with children, and Truckee police detained the driver minutes after being called around 2:45 p.m.
Authorities booked the driver on assault with a deadly weapon, felony vandalism and violation of his post-release community supervision; he was jailed in Nevada County jail in Nevada City, and police say all four injured are expected to survive.
The incident in a scenic Lake Tahoe–area town drew immediate community attention as Truckee, California, home to about 17,000 residents, faces concerns during February’s busy winter sports season.
