Man Dies After Being Hit by Falling Tree During Storm Boelo
A 60-year-old man was killed by a falling tree near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, on Sunday morning as Storm Boelo battered Scotland. Police Scotland confirmed the death at the scene, noting there were no suspicious circumstances.
Storm Boelo brought gusts of 84mph across Scotland, leaving more than 30,000 homes without power on Sunday. The Met Office issued an amber wind warning until 9pm, urging residents to "stay indoors as much as possible."
Fallen trees and flooding blocked major roads and rail lines, causing widespread travel disruption. Transport Scotland official Stuart Wilson said "significant recovery work" is required, while properties in Largs, Ayr, and Ballantrae were affected by flooding.
First Minister John Swinney convened the Scottish Government's Resilience Room on Sunday to coordinate the response. Housing Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville warned that travel disruption could continue into Monday and urged citizens to check official sources.
Forecasters are monitoring another low-pressure system moving in early next week, though it appears less potent than recent storms. Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell warned that further wet and windy weather could return despite expected respite.
