Man 'carrying handgun' shot and killed by police after crash in Norfolk
Armed police shot a man believed to be carrying a handgun after a two-vehicle crash, with the Independent Office for Police Conduct launching an inquiry.
- On Sunday, December 28, Norfolk Police shot a man believed to be carrying a handgun after a two-vehicle collision on London Road, Thetford at around 8.25pm.
- The man emerged from the wreckage holding what officers described as a handgun after a two-vehicle collision, and the man, believed to be the driver of one of the vehicles, left the crash scene.
- Norfolk Police confirmed armed response officers shot the suspect from a short distance and will hand over body-worn footage and 999 calls to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
- Norfolk Constabulary referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and an independent probe is under way; the A11 closed both ways with National Highways issuing diversions.
- Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley said `We understand this incident will cause concern in the community` and noted armed officers rarely discharge firearms, with no other suspects sought.
