Man, 19, becomes 14th person to die in water-related incidents during heatwave
Authorities say open water has become exceptionally dangerous as hot weather drives more swimmers to lakes, rivers and beaches across the UK.
On Thursday, a 19-year-old man died after entering Balderton Lake in New Balderton; Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the fatality on Saturday with no suspicious circumstances involved.
The death toll in water-related incidents during the heatwave has risen to 14, as police warned that open water is "exceptionally dangerous" due to hidden hazards beneath the surface.
Recent casualties include 15-year-old Chiedza Nyanjowa, who died in hospital Saturday after difficulties off Formby beach, and 13-year-old Reco Puttock, who died at Leadbeater Dam on Monday.
Group manager Charlotte Weatherall-Smith from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service warned that even warm days pose risks, urging the public to call 999 immediately if someone encounters difficulty in water.
Following record-breaking heat on Tuesday, when temperatures soared to 35.1C in Kew Gardens, the Met Office forecasts cooler weather across the nation next week with scattered showers expected on Sunday.
