Malaysia’s economy grows 5.3% on year in Q3, official advance estimate shows
Growth was led by services and manufacturing, while mining and quarrying fell 4.9%, the statistics department said.
On Friday, Statistics Malaysia reported that the economy grew 5.3% in the third quarter from a year earlier, beating the 5.1% median prediction but slowing from 6% in the previous quarter.
Expansion was driven by manufacturing, which rose 7.5%, and services, which climbed 5.4%; construction grew 6% while mining and quarrying contracted 4.9% due to lower oil production.
Robust domestic consumption and demand for electronics have cushioned the trade-dependent economy, as Malaysia has benefited from a global artificial intelligence infrastructure boom driving semiconductor and tech product demand.
The government last week raised its 2026 growth forecast to 4.8% to 5.3%, while Bank Negara Malaysia has held its main policy rate steady at 2.75% since May last year amid global tariff uncertainties.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim earlier this month announced increased cash aid and a higher minimum wage for next year to ease cost-of-living pressures, as officials estimate annual economic growth of 4.2% to 5.2% in 2027.
