Maine Center Guiding Local Opioid Settlement Spending Says Data Will Be Public Early Next Year
The Maine Opioid Settlement Support Center assists 39 localities with spending $22 million received so far and tracks use to ensure funds support prevention, treatment, and recovery.
- Last year, the Maine Opioid Settlement Support Center launched with $2.5 million from the attorney general's office and began building public dashboards to track settlement spending.
- After local committees dissolved in April 2024 due to conflicts and delays, a law passed earlier this year requires subdivisions to submit first annual spending reports in January, which the MOSS Center will review.
- The center has assisted 27 subdivisions, fulfilled 123 requests for assistance, and helped award $457,000 in awards to five organizations.
- The spending dashboard would be the first statewide public disclosure of local settlement spending, and the center is urging subdivisions to use its reporting form for review and legislative sharing.
- Maine expects to receive an estimated $261 million in settlements, with payments distributed through 2038, and Dr. Lindsey Smith said the center's role will evolve over the coming years.
