Magpies Coach Departs After Disastrous AFLW Season
Sam Wright will exit after a season-ending match as Collingwood faces a possible player exodus and wider coaching turnover.
Collingwood AFLW coach Sam Wright announced on Tuesday he will step down after this weekend's season-ending match against Essendon, concluding his three-season campaign with the Magpies.
The Magpies have struggled significantly during the 2026 season, managing only one win from 11 games, following Wright's 2024 wooden spoon and 3-9 record last year.
Wright's departure follows skipper Ruby Schleicher's announcement last week that she is returning to Western Australia, while AFLW football boss Laura Kane recently intervened to meet with the Collingwood board.
Coincidentally, the upcoming match will also serve as the final game for Essendon coach Natalie Wood, while St Kilda is currently searching for a replacement for Nick Dal Santo.
Facing a potential player exodus at the end of 2026, Collingwood must navigate contract expiries for Tarni White, Sarah Rowe, Mattea Breed, Lauren Butler, and Bri Davey amid the coaching transition.
