M&S Shoppers to Notice Major Change in Stores Under New Plans
The retailer said the Bluetooth-enabled labels will automate price updates and add AI tools to help staff find products and restock shelves.
Marks and Spencer announced plans to roll out digital shelf labels across select stores, partnering with retail technology firm Vusion to implement its Connected Store platform using e-paper screens.
The retailer is modernizing its estate to replace traditional paper price tags with automated digital systems, allowing remote cloud-based updates and reducing manual staff workload across store aisles.
Roy Horgan, CEO UK & Ireland at Vusion, said the company is "pleased to be working with M&S as it continues to invest in its store estate and colleague experience." The system includes location-aware capabilities with flashing labels to help staff locate products.
ESL technology enables more efficient shopping, said Toby Pickard, retail futures senior partner from the Institute of Grocery Distribution, freeing employees from manual tasks to spend more time assisting customers on the shop floor.
Following this initial deployment, further rollout potential exists in the future as major supermarkets across the UK high street race to embrace smart technology and AI-powered retail solutions.
