Drone Sightings Briefly Shut Luxembourg Airport
On Friday evening, Luxembourg Airport suspended all flight operations after detecting unauthorized drones near the aerodrome, resuming Saturday despite lingering schedule disruptions.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden held an emergency meeting with defense and interior ministers after officials observed "potentially larger drones" in Luxembourg's airspace in recent days.
National carrier Luxair reported that more than 1,800 passengers were affected, with 17 incoming flights diverted to Brussels, Paris, and Frankfurt as the airline worked to restore schedules.
Frieden confirmed the government is coordinating with NATO allies to secure national airspace, stating, "We will ensure, together with our partners, that we can guarantee the security of our populations."
Similar drone activity has occurred in Belgium, Germany, and Denmark, as European governments remain alert for Russian-linked hybrid activities affecting critical infrastructure since 2022.
Luxembourg is investigating a drone sighting in recent days, which led to the suspension of air traffic at Luxembourg's main airport overnight, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden said.
