From today, a reduced rate of value added tax (VAT) applies to food served in restaurants and fast food outlets in Germany. Instead of the previous 19 percent, the tax is charged at a rate of seven percent. The measure is intended to support restaurant owners and partially offset recent cost increases.
BERLIN. At the beginning of the year, VAT on food in restaurants in Germany drops from 19 to 7 percent - yet food is probably not going to be cheaper.
From 1.1.2026 the lower VAT rate of seven percent applies to food in the catering sector - as in Corona times. Guests will not benefit from this.
