Peter Jackson to Introduce 'The Lord of the Rings' Films in Theatrical Rerelease
The extended editions run 11.5 hours and have sold 407,000 tickets in presales, marking a 65% increase from the last re-release, says Fathom Entertainment.
- Earlier this week, Peter Jackson will introduce the extended editions of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, playing from Jan. 16 through Jan. 18 and Jan. 23 through Jan. 25.
- To mark the 25th anniversary, the trilogy commemorates The Fellowship of the Ring and has grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide, winning 17 Academy Awards based on J.R.R. Tolkien's work.
- Presales have generated $5 million domestically, Fathom says, with roughly 407,000 tickets sold so far, 65% ahead of the 2024 re-release that sold 246,000 tickets and earned $8.2 million.
- Fathom is adding locations, dates and showtimes to meet demand, and Ray Nutt, CEO, Fathom Entertainment, said fans will hear exclusive introductions from Jackson in theatres.
- Already it's a longer sit for audiences, with the extended editions cumulatively 11 and a half hours versus the original theatrical cuts, nine-plus hours, and Jackson producing The Hunt for Gollum due December 17, 2027.
