Emu Caught on Video Evading Deputies After Running Away From Owner
CHP said several callers reported the bird near Harper Street and 17th Avenue, and the owner later corralled it safely.
- Earlier this week, The California Highway Patrol in Santa Cruz responded to reports of a pet emu darting through traffic near Harper Street and 17th Avenue.
- After Somebody's pet emu escaped its property, the bird began running into local traffic, forcing officers to respond to an unexpected hazard on the roads.
- CHP said, "While we often deal with dogs, cats, deer, and occasionally birds, an Emu was unexpected!" after receiving reports of the animal "running in and out of the road."
- Following the owner's arrival on scene, officers quickly secured the animal; the agency reported, "We managed to safely corral their feathery friend."
- While emus are a novelty here, the Australian birds frequently cause havoc on roads in Australia, and police in New South Wales previously reported similar incidents.
