Longtime Shuswap Emergency Program coordinator standing down

Semchuk leaves after growing the volunteer team from 8 to 60 and helping build one of British Columbia’s highest skilled ESS programs.

  • Emergency Support Services Director and Emergency Program Coordinator Cathy Semchuk is retiring from the Shuswap Emergency Program after 20 years. Columbia Shuswap Regional District Regional Fire Chief Sean Coubrough announced the retirement during the Sept. 17 board meeting in Salmon Arm.
  • Following 26 years in property management, Semchuk joined the CSRD in 2007. The Shuswap Emergency Program itself originated after the 1998 Silver Creek Wildfire, which convinced officials a collaborative approach to emergencies was critical.
  • Leading the team for 20 years, Semchuk oversaw a transition to digital systems and expanded ESS volunteers from eight to 60. The province recognized the program as one of the highest-skilled, providing crucial support during recent wildfires.
  • Coubrough praised Semchuk's 'immense achievements' within CSRD Protective Services, noting her legacy as the longest-serving member. He credited her leadership for transforming the district into a recognized provincial emergency support leader.
  • Although retiring, Semchuk intends to remain involved in emergency projects, expressing gratitude to staff for their support. She confirmed her heart remains with the Shuswap program and she is prepared to return if another major event occurs.
