Lobo Builders Turns Abandoned Church into Six Townhomes, Reviving River Arts District Corner After Helene
The project preserves a historic church and adds housing in a district that Hurricane Helene damaged, with one arts district named No. 1 in the country.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, Lobo Builders unveiled The Treadway, a former church transformed into six Mountain Modern townhomes at 4-14 Roberts Street in Asheville's River Arts District.
Nearly two years after Hurricane Helene devastated the district, the project revives one of the area's most visible abandoned corners, aiming to help the beloved River Arts District recover.
Designed by Wilson Architects and Channel Designs Interiors, each residence features 23-foot dome ceilings, custom cabinetry, and preserved architectural stone from the original church structure alongside modern stairwells and French Broad River views.
Lobo Builders co-founder Thomas Wolfe, a two-time Griffin Award winner, called the renovation 'personally and professionally fulfilling' after dreaming of the project for years.
The Treadway is featured in the 2026 Western North Carolina Parade of Homes presented by the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with public tours October 17-18 and 24-25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
