Loblaw Increases Number of New Stores Planned for 2026

Per Bank said strong double-digit same-store sales are supporting the retailer’s expansion plan as it invests $2.4 billion in new stores and renovations.

  • On Tuesday, Loblaw announced it now expects to open about 75 new locations this year, up from earlier plans for about 70. The expansion includes grocery stores and Shoppers Drug Mart sites across Canada.
  • This growth is part of $2.4 billion in planned capital spending for 2026, with Loblaw having invested about half the total so far. Remaining funds support renovations and development of new retail formats.
  • To date in 2026, Loblaw has opened 38 new grocery stores and pharmacies in Canada, comprising 21 grocery locations and 17 Shoppers Drug Mart sites. Performance of these new formats supports the expansion strategy.
  • Loblaw chief executive Per Bank says the strong performance of new stores gives the company "confidence in our expansion strategy and in continuing to invest behind the formats customers are choosing." Bank cited customer demand as validation.
  • Remaining capital funds will accelerate new store openings while Loblaw continues developing new retail concepts and formats. The company positions expansion as central to meeting evolving customer preferences and market opportunities.
