Lithuania says drone sighting turns out to be flock of birds, after NATO summons jets

  • NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Lithuanian airspace overnight Tuesday near the village of Pratkknai in the Kaiaiadorys district, about 60 miles from Vilnius.
  • On Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned that strikes near alliance territory demonstrate Russian President Vladimir Putin's "desperation and also his desire to sow fear and terror." He pledged to bolster defenses for the 32-nation alliance.
  • Antanas Matutis, commander of the Lithuanian air force, said wreckage was recovered and the drone was "likely" carrying explosives. Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center, reported the device entered from Belarus and spent about 30 minutes in airspace.
  • Elsewhere, Russian forces shot down 222 Ukrainian drones overnight, the Defense Ministry said Tuesday. Meanwhile, eight people were wounded in Russian strikes on Kyiv, including two at gas stations, as Ukrainian attacks sparked fires in Taganrog.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that Kyiv is "ready to support de-escalation" if Russia is genuinely willing to end the war. President Donald Trump claimed both sides agreed not to target energy infrastructure, though details remain unconfirmed.
