Lithuania ‘in talks’ with Germany’s Rheinmetall on second investment – president’s office
- On Tuesday, Rheinmetall and Lithuanian partners began construction on a new ammunition factory in northern Lithuania, marked by a formal groundbreaking ceremony near Radviliškis district.
- Deividas Matulionis said such deals need sufficient `political will` and government funding, while rising support for Europe's defence sector and Lithuania's environment attract manufacturers.
- Valued at between 260 million and 300 million euros, the project is developed jointly by Rheinmetall, Epso-G Invest, and Giraitės Ginkluotės Gamykla; Matulionis called it one of the largest defence investments in Europe.
- The factory will sit on a 340-hectare site in Kemėrai village, about six kilometres from Baisogala, producing tens of thousands of 155 mm artillery shells annually with completion by the end of 2026.
- Rheinmetall is discussing a possible second investment in the near future, while talks with US and Scandinavian military industry companies have begun about projects in Lithuania.
