Libyan leader Haftar's airplane was in Abu Dhabi at same time as Netanyahu's visit
Il Foglio said the reported meeting was part of Saddam Haftar’s push for U.S. backing and a higher role in Libya’s political future.
Italian newspaper Il Foglio reported on Tuesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Saddam Haftar, son of the Libyan National Army commander, in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, though neither Netanyahu's office nor the UAE have publicly confirmed the encounter.
Flight-Tracking data showed a Libyan Airbus A319, previously used by Saddam, landing in Abu Dhabi 20 minutes after Netanyahu's arrival, with reports suggesting the meeting aimed to secure political support for his candidacy for the Libyan presidency.
Saddam has simultaneously been cultivating Washington relationships, hiring the consulting firm Ballard Partners for $2 million to represent eastern Libyan military leadership, after previously attempting to establish ties with Israeli officials via Ben Gurion Airport in 2021.
The diplomatic campaign comes as Saddam faces new allegations from Tripoli's rival government regarding attacks on oil infrastructure, while sources indicate he is preparing for a high-level meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Libya has remained divided since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, with rival administrations operating in the east and west; no independent source has yet verified the reported meeting between Netanyahu and Saddam.
