James K. Helms had been a dentist in Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania as the Civil War broke out and he joined the effort to save the Union. By June 1861, the 20-year-old was marching through the summer heat with Company D of the 6th Pennsylvania Infantry, part of General Robert Patterson’s Army of the Shenandoah pushing south toward the Potomac River.
