Foes of WA High-Earners Income Tax Launch Repeal Initiative
The committee says it will need 308,911 signatures by July 2 to reach November’s ballot and may instead aim for a 2027 vote.
- On Tuesday, Let's Go Washington founder Brian Heywood announced the conservative group will begin gathering signatures for a November ballot initiative to repeal Washington's new income tax on high earners.
- Governor Bob Ferguson signed the 9.9% income tax into law earlier this year to fund schools, universities, healthcare and other state services, imposing the levy on household wage income above $1 million.
- To qualify for the November ballot, opponents must submit 308,911 signatures by July 2, though state election officials advise gathering closer to 400,000 to account for invalid or duplicate entries.
- Heywood estimates the campaign will cost more than $10 million for his group, while he expects supporters of the income tax to spend between $50 million and $80 million defending it.
- Opponents filed a lawsuit last month challenging the tax's constitutionality under a 1933 state Supreme Court precedent, though House Majority Leader Joe Fitzgibbon said Most Democrats feel confident defending it in court.
