Less than one in five federally funded car charging stations are operational

  • Federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has announced $30 million in funding for the installation of over 1,500 new electric vehicle charging stations in Quebec. The funding will support 18 projects, with the majority going to Hydro-Québec for the installation of 1,194 charging stations.
  • Canadian National will also receive funding to install 62 charging stations near its stations, and several other organizations will receive funding for charging stations on their properties. The total investment comes from Natural Resources Canada's Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program.
  • Despite previous funding, data shows that fewer than one in five of the over 43,000 chargers funded over the last seven years are operational. An analysis suggests that Canada will need a total of 52,000 chargers by the end of 2025 and 200,000 chargers by 2030 to meet national EV sales targets.
