Legendary SoCal Radio Station To End FM Broadcast
Audacy says the new station will offer local sports talk and breaking news while KNX keeps its all-news format on AM 1070 and streaming.
- On Tuesday, Audacy announced that Los Angeles news radio station KNX will end its 97.1 FM simulcast, with the frequency re-branding as The Fan on May 11 as the market's first all-sports FM station.
- Los Angeles was the only top 10 market where Audacy lacked a sports station, and the KNX simulcast had previously boosted audience share more than 25% since 2021, demonstrating listener appetite.
- Branding itself as The Voice of LA Sports, the station will feature local daytime hosts, competing against AM outlets KLAC and KSPN that currently hold rights to major professional teams.
- "Los Angeles is the epicenter of the sports world, and 97.1 The Fan is its new voice," said Jeff Federman, Regional President of Audacy West, citing the 2028 Summer Olympics as a key driver.
- While the station launches without live play-by-play coverage, Audacy will pursue rights agreements with local teams as they become available, aiming to capitalize on listener appetite before the 2026 World Cup.
