Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Vows to Block Israel Framework Deal
Berri said the deal cannot be implemented and warned it could deepen sectarian tensions as Israel links withdrawal to Hezbollah disarmament.
On Monday, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri rejected the Washington-brokered agreement, warning it aims to "sow discord among the Lebanese" and stating it will not be implemented.
Signed in Washington on Friday, the agreement mandates Lebanese military control pending Hezbollah's disarmament, enabling Israeli forces to "progressively redeploy out of" southern Lebanon while maintaining operations.
Senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qomati described the accord as "born dead," vowing the group "will not allow it to be implemented" and would "confront it through every possible means."
Reports indicate a classified annex allows Israeli forces to operate inside a designated "Yellow Line," while legal experts questioned Article 13 for potentially limiting Lebanon's ability to pursue accountability.
More than a dozen political movements have rejected the accord, including the Amal Movement and the Progressive Socialist Party, extending opposition well beyond Hezbollah across Lebanon's political spectrum.
