Offensive Mastermind Mike Leach, Who Died in 2022, Heads Ballot for College Football Hall of Fame
The National Football Foundation lowered the coaching threshold to .595, making Leach eligible after his .596 career winning percentage kept him off previous ballots.
On Monday, the National Football Foundation released the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, officially including legendary coach Mike Leach for the first time following an adjustment to eligibility criteria.
The NFF previously required a.600 winning percentage, which kept Leach ineligible despite his 158-107 record at Texas Tech, Washington State, and Mississippi State; the organization lowered the threshold to.595 in 2025.
Known for his revolutionary Air Raid offense, Leach compiled a 21-year coaching career that influenced many active leaders, including Lincoln Riley, Sonny Dykes, Eric Morris, Dave Aranda, and Josh Heupel.
Joining Leach on the 2027 ballot are notable players including Heisman Trophy winners Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III, with the final Hall of Fame class announced in January 2027.
Nominees undergo a screening process to verify eligibility before members of the NFF and Football Writers Association of America vote, with results sent to the NFF Honors Court for final selections.
