Strike Is over at Laurentian University in Sudbury
A majority of Laurentian University faculty members ratified a new contract after striking over job cuts, wage rollbacks, and financial restructuring since 2021, union leaders said.
- On Feb. 8, the Laurentian University Faculty Association voted to ratify a collective agreement, ending a nearly three-week strike, LUFA said in a Sunday statement.
- LUFA said the strike followed the university's 2021 Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act proceedings that imposed cuts.
- The agreement provides 4 per cent in years one and two and 2 per cent in year three for sessional instructors, with 74% of 404 members voting approval.
- Classes could resume sometime this week if the contract is accepted, but Laurentian University had not issued an updated statement as of publication, and LUFA thanked the Sudbury community while preparing for bargaining tomorrow.
- Amid lingering distrust, LUFA said the deal leaves deeper issues unresolved as Fabrice Colin, LUFA president, noted some gains but ongoing legal fights including an Unfair Labour Practice complaint and Charter Challenge against the Government of Ontario via the CCAA Exit Loan Agreement.
