Wake-Up Weather: Concerns About Wildfires Continues
More than 250 firefighters battled the Belgian blaze as German authorities urged residents near Monschau to evacuate over smoke and border risk.
On Sunday, a wildfire raging in eastern Belgium doubled in size to 3,000 hectares, forcing residents in three districts of the German border town Monschau to evacuate due to heavy smoke.
The Wallonia regional government reported that "conditions remain challenging" two days after the fire erupted in the High Fens park, with more than 250 firefighters mobilized throughout the night.
Authorities "urgently" advised residents in Monschau to evacuate because "cannot be ruled out that there will be increased, significant smoke exposure and smoke fallout starting in the morning."
In southwestern France and the northeastern Ardennes, regional prefect Gilles Clavreul said the situation is developing more favourably, while Greek firefighters battle a forest fire on the island of Skyros.
Amid blistering temperatures and tinder-dry landscapes, countries across Europe continued battling wildfires on Sunday, as police in Croatia arrested four people suspected of starting blazes along the Adriatic coast.
