South Georgia Wildfires Exceed 53,000 Acres; Containment Remains Limited Despite Rain

- Wildfires in Brantley and Clinch counties have consumed more than 50,000 acres, destroying dozens of homes and forcing hundreds to evacuate. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for more than half the state's counties.

- Sparked by a foil balloon hitting power lines, the Highway 82 Fire destroyed at least 87 homes and torched more than 35 square miles. The Pineland Road Fire scorched more than 50 square miles, threatening roughly 1,000 homes.
- The Georgia Forestry Commission issued a 30-day burn ban last week for more than 90 southern counties to prevent further outbreaks. Federal Emergency Management Agency approved grants for Georgia and Florida to support firefighting efforts.
- More than 150 wildfires continue burning across Georgia and Florida as the region faces heightened fire risks. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson said the state is experiencing "one of the worst fire seasons in maybe the last 30 or 40 years.
