Los Angeles Police Swarm 6th Street Bridge for Minibike Takeover
Police said 78 riders were cited and 78 minibikes were impounded after officers stopped a group blocking the bridge and doing stunts.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department boxed in minibike riders on the Sixth Street Bridge, citing nearly 80 participants and impounding their vehicles to thwart a planned illegal takeover.
Authorities identified the gathering as an illegal street takeover under California Vehicle Code Section 21720. Minibikes lack required safety equipment and are legally prohibited on city streets due to high instability and visibility risks.
Police issued 78 citations and impounded minibikes for at least 48 hours. Participants ranged from 13 to 50 years old; Marvin Deleon and his 13-year-old daughter, Leilani Deleon, both received citations and had their bikes impounded.
Mayor Karen Bass stated the operation aimed to protect children, criticizing parents who participated. Arts District Business Improvement District Executive Director Miguel Vargas supported the police action, saying "this bridge is a right of way and it's not to be destroyed."
The operation follows a larger crackdown known as Operation Street Sweeper, which resulted in 700 people gathered and 200 vehicles impounded in Harbor Gateway one week prior. Personnel from the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County Sheriff also participated in these enforcement efforts.
