Lamb Easter Prices 'Through the Roof' as Climate Change Hits Supermarket Bills
Climate-linked drought, heat and heavy rain have lifted a typical 2kg leg of lamb by 7% to 21%, the ECIU said.
- UK lamb prices have risen by up to 21% since 2022 due to weather shocks, according to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit .
- Analysis by the ECIU links the price surge to specific climate events: the 2022 drought increased prices by 11%, while the wet winter of 2023/24 caused a 25% hike.
- Sheep farmer Jack Cockburn of Ceredigion, Wales, said, "Here in West Wales, extreme weather is our biggest challenge," noting wet winters cause waterlogged soils and lighter lambs at slaughter.
- Households that eat lamb regularly have seen £168 added to their bills over the past three years due to these climate-driven production challenges, the ECIU report found.
- Beyond livestock, Easter egg costs have climbed by two-thirds in three years following poor cocoa harvests in West Africa caused by heavy rain, drought, and heatwaves.
