Kremlin says Russia can do business with US if it stops linking trade to Ukraine
Moscow said U.S. and Russian companies could profit from joint projects if Washington stops tying trade normalization to a Ukraine peace deal.
On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Russia is interested in joint economic projects with the United States if Washington stops conditioning trade normalization on a Ukrainian peace settlement.
President Vladimir Putin set conditions in June 2024 requiring Ukraine withdraw from four regions Russia says it has annexed, comprising about 20% of the country; Ukraine rejected these terms as absurd.
Proposed joint ventures include Arctic mineral development and a 'Putin-Trump' rail tunnel under the Bering Strait, championed by Russia's investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Despite these proposals, Russia remains under sweeping United States sanctions linked to the war; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed skepticism, saying he does not believe Russia intends to stop fighting.
Efforts by the United States to end the conflict have yielded no breakthroughs after over four years of intense fighting, though both President Vladimir Putin and President Trump suggest an end is near.
Russia is interested in joint economic projects with the United States, but Washington must stop making them conditional on a peace agreement with Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday. The war will only end if the conditions set out years ago by President Vladimir Putin are met, he said.
