KMT deputy chair attacks Speaker Han over special defense budget
A deputy chair of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) threatened at a meeting Wednesday to have Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) expelled from the party over his reported support for a NT$800 billion (US$25.31 billion) special defense budget, prompting party Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) to step in to try to smooth things over.
The draft of the National Defense Special Act is stalled. Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu is expected to convene another cross-party consultation next week. Deputy Minister of National Defense Hsu Szu-chien stated at a press conference after the Executive Yuan meeting on April 30 that only by allocating a special national defense budget can the planning for drones, countermeasures systems, and other aspects be in place.
